This is one of the best late 19th century silver collars I’ve ever owned.

Embellished with yellow and rose gold, it has the plus of being exquisitely engraved on every flower.

There are tiny differences on each one, whether the shape of the bud, the engraved design on it or the background sprigs.

Each link has an unusual double-circle shape, with a gold overlay and scalloped edges.

The combining of different coloured precious metals in jewellery at the end of the 19th century was inspired by the work of Japanese craftsmen, which was being seen by Western jewellers for the first time in 200 years.

The darkened silver background refers back to Japan’s traditional alloy of gold and copper, known as shakudo.

This collar was almost certainly handcrafted in the US, as it is stamped “STANDARD”. The length is a generous 18 1/2 inches.

It looks lovely on its own, or pair it with a complementary locket.
