SOLD: Victorian silver locket with rose and yellow gold flowers, hallmarked Birmingham 1881

Silver lockets were the height of fashion in the late Victorian period.
If you were a stylish woman you might choose one like this from the Aesthetic Movement, with its strong Japanese influence.
Rose and yellow gold are applied to sterling silver, mixing metal colours in an imitation of Japanese sword decorations.
The background of tiny engraved squares echoes Japanese textile designs. More subtle in influence is the use of informal flowers, part of the reference to nature in much of Japanese art.
This locket is in excellent condition and is fully hallmarked for Birmingham 1881.
