SOLD: Victorian sapphire and diamond seven-stove carved half hoop ring, circa 1890
$2,680.00
Out of stock
Carved half hoop rings were very popular in England in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They are usually made using a generous amount of gold, unlike their early and mid-Victorian counterparts.
Nineteenth century ring styles didn’t change greatly from the start of the Romantic period of the 1830s until about the 1880s. Then the impact of the great gold discoveries of the mid to late 19th century, combined with plentiful diamonds from South Africa, meant that a new style of ring was available to the middle-class modern woman – a ring to wear every day without worrying about delicate settings.
Diamonds on their own or combined with other hard precious gems started to take over from pearl and gem-set rings.
This example features three rich blue unheated sapphires and four bright old mine cut diamonds.
The sides are engraved with deep scrolls carved into the thick gold (hence the “carved” descriptor).
The stones are set deep into the gold, and the ring sits low on the finger.
All of these qualities add long-term durability to an appealing and classic design.
