SOLD: Victorian rose gold guard chain, 59 inches, circa 1890
A gold guard chain was a major piece of jewellery for many middle class women in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
This classic nine-carat rose gold oval belcher-link English example has both an outer and a concealed inner link, allowing the chain to sit well without kinks when doubled or tripled.
It also adds durability, with an extra layer of gold to take any friction through years of daily wear.
The links are faceted too, allowing the light to play appealingly across the surface.
At the end near the dog clip is an applied oval disc, stamped 9C, denoting its antique English origin.
Weighing a substantial 36.3 grams, and a long 59 inches, this could become your everyday favourite, either on its own or combined in one of the countless clever ways shown on Instagram.
