SOLD: Victorian gold earrings, circa 1890
$904.50
Out of stock
I’m always pleased to find good antique earrings as relatively few have survived intact.
Often one is lost or accidentally trodden on, or they are shortened or ruinously converted in some way – perhaps into two pendants or a brooch. I’ve listed just a few of the perils that old earrings have had to survive to still be around today.
This late Victorian nine-carat yellow gold pair are typical of late 19th century English examples. They’re shorter than earrings of previous decades and have plain, dome-covered backs.
The fronts are highly decorated, with patterned three-dimensional die-stamped elements soldered together. (The small hole at the back of each earring allowed hot gases to escape during the soldering.)
This process used fine sheets of gold, which makes these very light to wear – and perfect for every day.
