SOLD: Victorian Archaeological Revival gold locket, circa 1880
$1,876.00
Out of stock
Archaeological Revival jewellery was still very fashionable in about 1880 when this 15-carat yellow gold locket was handcrafted.
By this time the influence was more suggestive of ancient jewels, rather than the near-copies made around 1860.
The decorative applied gold elements here include twisted wire in a scalloped border, accented with alternating half-spheres and darts.
The midline carries five vertical bands of gold, one ridged rope twist, flanked by a plain band on either side, with a further line of tiny balls on the outside edges.
The gold has the bright yellow but somewhat matte finish typical of jewellery of the time, reminiscent of the ancient jewels that inspired their 19th century counterparts.
The back is plain and could be worn facing that way, for a completely different look.
