Ask a question

This delightful late 19th century rivière features bright, white antique diamonds in cut down silver settings on a gold base.

As the settings are open at the back it can be dated to later than circa 1830 but, as the style remained the height of fashion throughout the century, these are difficult to date exactly.

The plethora of reproductions on the market makes this even more of a challenge.

Here the mix of old mine cut and old European cut diamonds indicates its origin is the late 19th century.

The largest central stone weighs an estimated 1.25 carats and there are almost 15 carats in total. The centre stone also has a hidden dropdown bale for when the wearer wishes to attach a pendant.

Though made for a tiny neck, it would be easy to add an extension of fine chain at the back – so long this is done by a jeweller used to working with antiques, who can ensure this step is totally reversible.
