Here’s an appealing late Victorian 18-carat gold gypsy set old mine cut diamond ring, with a squared setting above a fluted skirt on a wide divided band.

The central diamond weighs about 0.17 carats and is white and lively.

Sometimes rings like this are created from a wide pre-existing band with an element from another piece, say a stickpin top, married together. This was always one ring.

The date letter is partially obscured by being struck on an open part of the band, but it is definitely from Birmingham in the last part of the 19th century.

As it’s lavish in its use of gold, with the low bead setting keeping the diamond secure, this is a ring you could wear every day.
