Coral jewellery seems to have always been fashionable. The 1850s were no exception, when wealthy English tourists visiting Italy took home beautiful jewellery like this as a reminder of their Grand Tour of Europe.

The pure soft apricot shade of this coral is most appealing, and the bracelet is in remarkable condition given its fragility and age.

Those of us who have been in the antique jewellery business a long time are used to seeing sad survivors of this type of coral jewellery.

Here there are some losses, notably a chipped wing, a missing beak for the dove, and a leaf absent near the centre. But the busy Victorian design hides this from all but the closest scrutiny.

Bracelets were very popular in the mid-Victorian period, bold and big in keeping with the times. Typical motifs – a dove, grapes, grape leaves and branches – are skilfully executed. The coral has retained its gloss too.
