SOLD: Victorian Brazilian/snake link guard chain, circa 1900
$3,015.00
Out of stock
This wonderfully silky, slinky Brazilian/snake link guard chain was handcrafted in the late Victorian era, about 1900.
I’ve always loved this style of chain, though they are so hard to find.
The gold is yellow in some lights and has a rosy tinge in others. XRF testing shows it to be 11-carat, though the chain bears a 12-carat mark.
This kind of discrepancy is not uncommon in jewellery. It used to go largely undetected but XRF testing has brought a level of accuracy to non-invasive metal testing not previously possible through touchstone and acid testing.
It’s approximately 58 inches (148cm) long and the link is 3mm wide, and it weighs 32.2 grams.
