Fringed earrings were highly fashionable in the mid-Victorian period, roughly 1860 to 1880.

This lovely 15-carat gold pair featuring round banded agates in an ornate dished centre are almost certainly English, given the mini snake chains ending in pointed caps that form the tassels, and the closed backs.

They possibly date from about 1880 when earrings, though still a focus for stylish women, were not quite as large as a decade earlier.

The pear shape is my favourite for an earring – to my eye it suits every face.

I also look for movement. Here the fringes and the pretty articulated flower-shaped top section provide so much interest when worn.

The condition is superb, too.
