These very pretty late 19th century amethyst and diamond earrings have a classic design of a pear-shaped drop hanging from a round top.

The simple unfussy design make these easy to wear with modern clothes and all sorts of other jewellery.

The dealer before me converted them from a necklace. (I wouldn’t have done this – but he will have made a better profit by breaking it up.) Though I’m not often a fan of conversions, these work remarkably well.

They stay true to that classic design I referred to and have retained their original delicate, crown-like 18-carat gold settings.

The new 18-carat hooks are well made and of good quality.

Most importantly, the gemstones themselves, the stars of the show, are quite lovely. The mauve amethysts are very sparkly, which is not always the case, and the old cut diamonds are white and bright.
