Handcrafted chains are a rarity these days as making them is so labour intensive.

This handsome 18-carat gold late Victorian guard chain has an interesting ribbed belcher link.

You do see similar in both gold and silver hollow chains but here we have an exception – a heavy, solid one, weighing 58 grams.

Close to the end is the carat mark in a tiny applied rectangle – typical of late 19th century English chains.

A handmade twisted gold ring holds the dog clip. This is a modern addition that could be removed, though I think it works rather well.

The length is a generous 62 inches, the colour is rich and the condition crisp and unworn.
