Here’s a lovely French 18-carat butterfly brooch from the late 19th century.

Its body is set with a bright red ruby and the wings are scattered with tiny emeralds and rose cut diamonds.

The surface is a rich matte gold, often found in antique jewels that haven’t been worked on by a jeweller applying heat, then having to polish the metal to get rid of the subsequent discolouration.

A delicate fretwork border around the butterfly adds a pretty finish. There are French marks on both pin and hook.
