It’s many years since I’ve found a good strand of Australian crystal opal beads.

Graduating in size from 2.9mm to 5.6mm, the round beads show a strong play of colour over the full spectral range.

It is very rare to see good Australian opal bead necklaces as there is enormous wastage in the cutting process. As far as I know there are none produced today.

A word generally about my opal valuations: I go to a lot of trouble to get reliable and realistic estimates for insurance purposes.This involves consulting with Sydney’s most knowledgeable dealer in precious opals when I have something as rare as here.

Opals are the most difficult of all gems to value as they have so many varied qualities that contribute to each stone being unique, as many of you know. So I try to get the most objective and informed opinion possible.

This necklace comes complete with its charming original opal, diamond and 14-carat gold clasp from about 1935.

At 17 inches, or 43 cm, the length is great, too.
