SOLD: 18-carat gold chalcedony swivel seal fob, 19th century
$2,345.00
Out of stock
There are so many wonderful qualities to this very large antique watch fob.
The workmanship is outstanding – deeply carved, elaborate and delicate shells, acanthus leaves and flowers in rich 18-carat gold, typical of the 1830s, frame the double-sided chalcedony seal.
A concealed lever near the top pulls down so it can easily swivel to seal letters. One side shows a portrait intaglio of a handsome man, the other a rearing horse above a castle turret with a monogram beneath.
The large top ring allows a variety of chains or a velvet ribbon to be threaded through.
This beauty is not gold cased, unlike most in this style, but crafted from 18-carat gold throughout.
The large size of 2 1/4 inches and weight of 43.6 grams, plus the wonderful condition, all add to its appeal to collectors.
