Here’s a terrific Mexican silver bib necklace made by Los Castillo, dating from the 1960s.

The company was formed in 1939 by four brothers – Antonio, Jorge, Miguel and Justo Castillo – who had trained under William Spratling, the father of the city of Taxco’s silver jewellery industry.

Here two simple shapes, crescents and teardrops, are cleverly combined.

A circle of crescents surrounds the neck. More cascade in tiers from the front, all connected by simple rings to allow movement and moulding to the body.

Teardrop-shaped pieces are similarly joined and sit centrally within the front crescents.

The wearable length is 16 inches and all the elements are solid. This brings the necklace’s weight to a satisfyingly substantial 74 grams.
