Late Georgian or early Victorian fede ring with hair locket, circa 1835
$1,005.00
1 in stock
This late Georgian or early Victorian fede ring from about 1835 conceals a hair locket compartment.
Fede comes from the Italian “mani in fede” (hands clasped in faith). Rings like these have symbolised love, friendship or betrothal since ancient times.
This dainty 11-carat yellow gold example is a 7 or N 1/2 and cannot be resized. The initials “HB” are inscribed on the bottom of the hand-engraved band.
Though the 11-carat gold purity might sound unusual, non-standard alloys were common in antique jewellery. Previously such a ring would have been described as nine-carat or 12-carat when tested by touchstone and acid, for which a certain amount of interpretation of the resulting trace is needed.
Now, due to the accuracy of XRF testing, we can now pick up these minute variations.
Though there is some hair loss, the ring is in excellent condition for a jewel approaching 200 years old.
It will come in a lovely old vintage ring box.
