Ask a question

We see a lot of Georgian Revival jewels from the first decade of the 20th century misidentified online as coming from the Georgian period 100 years earlier.

This flat cut garnet pendant is both an homage to the latter and a very pretty example of the former. It also exemplifies the differences between the two eras.

The foiled garnets are more red (less pink/purple), the closed backs are flatter and the claws are finer than those seen in Georgian counterparts.

While those are the main differences to look for, in this case the curving knife-edge rose gold bars at the sides of the pendant have a distinctly Edwardian feel.

Though it’s from 1910 rather than 1810, this is still a delightful antique jewel of its time.

And if someone admires your “Georgian” garnets, you can smile and decide whether or not you wish to enlighten them!
