I’m so pleased to offer this late Georgian memorial ring inscribed for 1821, set with a large and lively white Peruzzi cut diamond flanked by two old mine cut diamonds on either side, in a rectangular surround of 16 similarly sized old mine cut diamonds.

The trifurcated 15-carat yellow gold shoulders are engraved with acanthus leaves and buds, each enclosing a further three old mine cut diamonds, completed by a wide and flat triple-reeded band.

We can’t make out the top word of the inscription inside but presumably it’s the deceased’s first name. The remainder is “Costar Esq Obt 31 May 1821 Aet 66”.

The ring is a small 4 3/4 or J – sizeable, but not by much. (It would look at its best on a little finger to display its lovely sides.)

This sort of jewel is viewed as a ladies’ ring today but at the time it could have been worn by either sex.

It’s rare to find a good Peruzzi cut in a fine original ring like this. Preceding the old mine cut, it’s almost square – more of the original crystal shape has been retained.

As the cut is very deep it is difficult to estimate the weight of the main stone but it’s between three-quarters of a carat and one carat. There is a delightful limpid quality to the play of light as it moves.
