The Edwardian age produced exquisite refined jewellery, exemplified by this sapphire and diamond plaque ring.

The central oval sapphire has been assessed as a Ceylon type and is a bright and lively blue.

A double halo of high-quality full old cushion cut diamonds form the surround. There is a space between the two diamond halos, an important detail adding lightness – and challenging to execute.

The inner circle has a scalloped edge that echoes the sides of the 18-carat yellow gold mount. Fine trefoil shoulders join the band.

The top setting is 18-carat white gold and, indeed, the whole ring looks much more like a white metal ring than yellow.

Though about 100 years old this jewel remains in wonderful condition.

The skill involved in the cutting and setting of those tiny diamonds, each just over one point in size, is a joy to see.
