Edwardian jewellery is pretty and feminine, as epitomised by this oval unheated ruby and old cut diamond ring.

The intense and bright Thai ruby is a lovely shade of red with a little pink. It weighs more than a carat and is surrounded by about half a carat of good quality old European cut diamonds in a scalloped setting.

This delicate scalloped effect, a hallmark of the Edwardian era, could only be achieved with fine bezel settings, so no claws interrupt the unbroken line. The millegrained finish adds a further feeling of delicacy.

The spear-shaped shoulders each hold a mine cut diamond.

The looped gold sides echo the top design, with just the top setting in 18-carat white gold, so the diamonds do not reflect the yellow gold of the rest of the mount.

There are slight signs of wear from being worn next to another ring, so this jewel is best left to star alone.

The bezel settings are still very secure, holding the stones in place at all points of contact.
