My love of turn-of-the-20th-century English handcrafted gold keeper rings continues with this nine-carat rose gold example made in Birmingham in 1902.

As England’s centre of jewellery making for centuries has been the Midlands city, it’s not surprising to find its anchor mark on many surviving hallmarked pieces.

Rings like this were made in relatively large numbers in scores of small jewellery workshops.

Here continuous thick gold wire is shaped into a pleasing closely woven pattern, with a row of gold balls individually soldered on top. (Cast reproductions are identifiable from the rough surfaces left in the tiny gaps of their plaits.)

This ring is in unworn condition, so the balls are still perfectly round.

Pieces in this style – well-loved and so very wearable – are relatively easy to source.

Finding a pristine, lovely example like this is another matter entirely.
