Here’s a hard-to-find Australian opal carved half hoop ring, hallmarked for Birmingham 1902.

The lively opals show good colour play and are accented with tiny rose cut diamonds, set in the gold between the oval stones.

The sides are decorated with handcarved scrolls, typical of this lovely style, which became popular in England in the late 19th century.

Most good opals unearthed in Australia at this time were exported to countries including the UK, France and the US, given their larger populations and wealthier, more sophisticated buyers.

This is a fairly wide ring, so it would suit a larger hand.
