Here’s a lovely antique platinum five-stone ring with about 1.20 carats of very good early brilliant cut diamonds graduating in size.

The centre stone is about half a carat, the two diamonds on either side are roughly half that size, then there are two diamonds half that size again on the ends. It’s a classic combination that works very well.

This type of ring can be difficult to date. Finely pierced handcrafted claw set platinum rings were popular for decades in the early to mid 20th century. They were not hallmarked, due in part to their narrow bands.

But this bears a sweet inscription – “Bob to Flo Sept 24th 1915” – putting this appealing example near the beginning of the style.

Perhaps Bob fought in the First World War?

What we do know is that Flo looked after this ring very well, as did her descendants. It is in remarkably unworn condition.
