SOLD: Early Victorian turquoise heart necklace with photo lockets, circa 1845
$7,370.00
Out of stock
This quintessential early Victorian bracelet was made in about 1845 by one of the finest English jewellers and silversmiths of the time, Hunt & Roskell.
It has survived in pristine condition partly because it still has the original box bearing the royal warrant. The firm was a favourite of Queen Victoria’s.
Sometime after this its owner decided to make it into a delightful necklace by adding in a section of gold snake chain of a similar age but with a slightly different link.
As a bracelet this would be lovely, though vulnerable to damage when worn. As a necklace it works exceedingly well, with all that crisp chiselled gold and bright blue turquoise more likely to remain immaculate by being protected around the neck.
This piece features so many emblems of love – hearts, turquoise forget-me-nots, love knots, and there’s a delightful surprise on the back.
Each heart contains a charming hand-tinted early photo of a loved one. These are more than 100 years old, though not as old as the necklace.
The box has also been treasured and remains in beautiful condition.
I feel privileged to have the chance to offer this gorgeous necklace again, about 20 years after I first sold it.
The present owner never wore it but loved and admired it. Now she is at an age when she is divesting herself of valuable possessions.
This quality was so very hard to find then, and is far more difficult to source now.
