SOLD: Early Art Deco fire opal and diamond ring, circa 1920
$5,963.00
Out of stock
This stunning fire opal and diamond plaque ring from about 1920 combines elements of both Edwardian and Art Deco styles.
The vibrant colour of the Mexican fire opal contrasting with the white diamonds speaks of the early Art Deco period when bold new colour combinations ran riot.
The rectangular shape with cut-off corners was a popular choice in Edwardian rings, reminiscent of late 18th and early 19th examples.
It sits very low on the finger, creating a two-dimensional effect also reminiscent of those earlier rings.
By the end of the Edwardian period platinum was the metal of choice for high-end jewellery.
Jewellers had learned to exploit its ability to create ultra-fine yet secure settings for gemstones, such as here, where the metal virtually disappears and the gems are able to star unimpeded in their simple but striking geometric display.
