This style of engagement ring, popular between the two world wars, is one of many variations on an Art Deco theme.

A central round brilliant diamond in a square setting is flanked by stepped-down shoulders, reminiscent of a ziggurat.

This pretty example is made from 18-carat white gold with a platinum top setting, and is in as-new condition despite being about 80 years old.

The charming sides with their leaf-like pattern were achieved by heavy presses forming both the overall shape and decoration.

This type of ring is delicate, using less gold than a fully handcrafted example.

This means that, even though it was made as an engagement ring, I would not advise wearing a wedding band or another ring against it every day as the friction would cause wear to the sides before many years passed.

On its own, it’s totally suitable for daily wear.
