Ask a question

Early 20th century dress rings often look more like their late Georgian counterparts than their 19th century predecessors.

Rectangles and modified rectangles such as this elongated hexagon were fashionable again, rather than the elongated navette with its pointed ends favoured by the Victorians.

This lovely example has one of my favourite Edwardian design elements – space between the elements that adds lightness, something not commonly seen previously. This was made possible by the discovery of platinum’s quality to securely hold stones using very little metal.

The centre diamond is an early brilliant cut, the smaller ones are old single cuts.

Rose cut diamonds would have been used in the Georgian counterpart, at least for the smaller stones.

But the newly invented single cut for small diamonds enabled much more sparkle, and indeed puts this ring into those pieces transitioning between Edwardian and Art Deco, with sharpness predominating over softness.
