SOLD ON SITE: Art Deco marcasite and sterling silver greyhound brooch from about 1930
Out of stock
This marcasite greyhound from between the wars, with its bright green paste eye, was probably made in Germany or Austria.
The masters of the trade lived there, and much of their work was fashionable worldwide.
But increasing international tensions meant manufacturers often left their jewellery unmarked – as here – so as not to draw attention to its origins.
As there is a lot of reproduction marcasite jewellery on the market, I would like to point out a couple of basic differences between new and old.
Older pieces are usually finer and lighter as they are often handmade rather than cast, so use less metal.
The older pieces from before the 1960s have beads of silver pushed up from the body that secure each marcasite stone. (Modern marcasites are glued into place.)
It’s quite easy to see those setting beads if you scroll through to my close-up pictures.
One more thing, the marcasites tend to be more closely set in good old examples like this. It meant more work and expense for the jeweller but the result is worth it.
I have a lot of vintage marcasite jewellery in my shop, but only this piece online. If you are after something in particular please do get in touch.
