Ask a question

This Art Deco aquamarine ring has so much going for it, including a very interesting inscription.

The intense blue stone is unusually shallow for an aquamarine of such a good hue, enabling the ring to sit low on the finger in its finely pierced platinum mount.

The cut-off corners are an uncommon modification to the traditional four-sided rectangular cut.

Baguette cut diamonds lie along these facets, interspersed with round and square diamonds in a delicate frame.

A further baguette on each shoulder completes the elegant and pretty look.

This has all the characteristics of a pre-World War Two ring, and is a precursor to the later, larger cocktail rings we normally see.

And the inscription confirms this. It’s dated 2.9.39 (September 2 in the UK format, and I suspect this is an English ring) – the day after war was declared.

One wonders if this was a coincidence or if there is a hidden story marking this momentous time.
