This snake brooch from about 1880 is a current favourite of mine.

Wrapped sinuously around a star-studded crescent moon and with a lustrous pearl in its mouth, the body is covered with fine applied filigree.

The surface retains its original matte finish, seen only in pieces which have not had heat applied by a jeweller performing even a small repair.

A lot of brooches need to be pinned at an exact angle to look their best. Not so here – this looks great whatever the orientation.

It would be wonderful if one of you men out there were tempted by this. Its definitely one that a stylish man could wear well.
