Ask a question

This little high-carat gold Victorian safe opens back and front to reveal compartments for eight photos.

It’s such a fun piece for a jewellery dealer or collector, as I’m sure you’ll agree. (I’ve never seen one like it in my more than 40 years in this business – so I kept it in my personal collection for a time.)

The workmanship is exquisite. The hinges are a delight – they’re so fine. And the engraving has been carved by a master craftsman.

It bears an English registration mark for October 3rd 1862 and is stamped with the same information. Registration marks were used for part of the 19th century to signify the invention of an original device – they served as a patent for the maker.

The arched inner frames once held daguerreotypes, according to my jeweller. Of course, the locket’s next owner could have modern photographs inserted.
