Ask a question

Essex crystals, or reverse crystal intaglios to give them their correct title, became fashionable around the 1870s.

They often feature beloved breeds of dogs –  like this sweet terrier with the tip of his pink tongue hanging out. Could anyone please help out with naming the terrier type?

This is most realistically depicted, partly because the carving is so deep. This means the three-dimensional effect is very strong.

As the years went by these carvings became more shallow, requiring less time and less skill. That is one of the reasons these appealing crystal jewels vary so much in price.

Another price variable comes if they have become discoloured over time, owing to moisture reaching into the setting. This will give a whitish cast to parts of the painting. It does make a big difference to their collectability.

This crystal is set in high-carat gold, as you would expect from an early, first-rate example.
