Miners’ brooches, a relic of the great gold rushes of the 19th century, are a charming oddity.

The motifs are various mining tools, usually arranged – as here – in a horizontal cross. This example is made from 15-carat gold and retains its original bloomed finish.

The workmanship is finer than usual, as seen in the delicate sieve and the rope around the pick and shovel.

I love that the original hanging gold nugget is still present too.
