SOLD: Victorian guard chain in 14-carat gold, 60 inches, circa 1880
$2,680.00
Out of stock
This late 19th century high-carat gold guard chain has a very interesting double belcher link. Each one has a deep concave curve, giving a lovely textural depth to the appearance.
The high-carat antique clasp is a replacement, which is obvious only because it is slightly more yellow in colour.
Clasps, as they have moving parts, are often the first thing to need replacement in an antique piece. Usually there is not much impact on the price, unless the clasp itself was a feature of the original jewel, as in many Georgian chains, for example.
By the end of the 19th century, most long chains had simple fasteners like a dog clip, or a large bolt ring, as in this example.
This chain has been handcrafted in 14-carat yellow gold, and is a bit longer than most at a full 60 inches.
