This 18-carat gold late Victorian ring features two devices I love.

Clasped hands are familiar to most of us as a symbol of love, they’re often found in antique jewellery. Here they have been added to a “magic” band – when slowly rotated its herringbone pattern creates an optical illusion of increasing and decreasing width.

England produced vast quantities of interesting gold jewellery around this time for the rapidly expanding middle class. Great diversity exists within this period – the late 19th and early 20th centuries still provide fertile hunting ground for collectors today.

There was no mass production then but rather hundreds of small workshops producing jewellery in their own distinctive styles.
