Ask a question

Here’s an intriguing high-carat gold 19th century seal, featuring a bright green chalcedony and beautiful scrolled work on the case.

The base is carved to depict a sealed letter. A French inscription around it says: “LISEZ ET CROYEZ ET TAISEZ VOUS.” This roughly translates as: “Read and believe and keep your mouth shut.” What secret letter can it allude to?

Although the words are French it’s likely this fob was made on the other side of the Channel – it was English jewellers who worked with 15-carat gold, and they often used the French language for these seals.
