Ask a question

Three-stone diamond rings in which all the stones are the same size make great engagement and stacking rings, creating a straight line to sit against one or more other bands.

This early 20th-century handcrafted example is more robust than many from the period yet at the same time delicate in appearance, due to the finely pierced sides of darts and scrolls and a central heart.

It features three lively old European cut diamonds with good colour and clarity (H-I, SI1-SI2) – their total weight is about 0.82 carats.

The shoulders are adorned with sweet bows carved into the palladium, the white metal used throughout the top setting.

Palladium was commonly used as an alternative to platinum in jewellery from 1939, when the latter became a strategic resource in the war effort. It had been in use from the early 20th century.

I believe this ring dates from about 1923, as I bought it directly from an elderly lady who inherited it down the family from her grandmother, who married in about that year.

The bride must have taken great care of it, as did her descendants – it’s in virtually unworn condition.
