I’m always delighted when a piece of Murrle Bennett jewellery appears here in Sydney.

This 15-carat gold turquoise and pearl pendant is immediately recognisable as the kind of jewel they made for the English market in the early years of the 20th century and sold through Liberty of London and other retailers.

In their time they were pre-eminent jewellers of the Arts and Crafts movement, which was born in England in the mid-19th century. Murrle, as the German partner, brought with him Jugendstil/Art Nouveau influences. Their work remains prized by collectors today

This design, with its sinuous curves snd knots, has a typically Celtic influence – in their reaction against industrialisation and what they viewed as excessive ornamentation, Arts and Crafts exponents looked to folk art and other simpler decorative styles.

Matrix turquoise with pearl accents was Murrle Bennett’s favoured combination, and here we have a beautiful, chunky turquoise in the starring role.
