I always feel excited to find antique earrings that look contemporary to the casual observer.

The pared-down geometry of ovals, rounds and squares works so well in this wonderfully preserved example from about 1880.

The matte 15-carat gold is simply embellished, with one row of twisted gold around the central motif.

There is a lot of skilled workmanship at play. It’s a deceptively simple design: many separate components have been hand assembled to form a beautifully balanced whole.

• Handmade in 15-carat yellow gold
• Approximately 2.1cm (5/6 inch) long, 1.8cm (3/4 inch) wide
• Weight is 6.6 grams
• In excellent antique condition
• Will come in a Karen Deakin gift box (the antique box is not for sale)

Please examine the photographs carefully – they form part of the description.
