SOLD: Late Victorian coral bead necklace, 18 inches
$1,005.00
Out of stock
It’s hard to believe that this coral necklace is Victorian – the design looks so Art Deco, or even modernist.
Yet this design was popular in the late 19th century. I have seen and owned quite a few over the years.
They were popular as tourist souvenirs from Italy at a time when coral was plentiful and the cost of labour to hand carve and assemble such trinkets was minimal.
At some time this has been restrung to the original design. The brass clasp appears to be original but the cotton thread looks quite fresh.
The colour is wonderful – a rich orangey red. It’s not dyed, of course, unlike so much new coral jewellery.
Many countries now ban coral imports as an attempt to protect dwindling stock. If you are interested in buying this, please check your local customs regulations.
