Here’s a classic English Edwardian nine-carat rose gold locket made in Chester in 1909.

The lack of ornamentation is its best asset. The highly polished smooth surface acts as a convex mirror, so the light play is ever-changing.

And there no little dents to spoil the simple perfection.

Faint jewellers’ scratch number marks can be seen in the interior, as well as traces of the yellow gilding that would probably once have covered the exterior.

Nine-carat rose gold was frequently plated with pure yellow gold to make a piece look a higher carat, and thus more expensive.

Many of us now appreciate the soft colour that remains – this doesn’t have a modern equivalent.

Today’s rose gold is mainly alloyed with copper, rather than the mix of silver and copper used in antique pieces.

The locket’s interior comes complete with an inner frame for a photograph.
