Ask a question

Here’s one for the pansy lovers, and aren’t there a lot of us!

This matte enamel, gold and old brilliant cut diamond pendant/brooch from the early 20th century is American – there were a handful of east coast companies who produced very fine examples of enamel pansies (and sometimes other flowers) and set the trend for others to follow.

Early examples like this usually have a hook at the back for a watch to hang from.

The enamel colours work beautifully here, the yellow centre delicately reappearing on the dusty pink petal edges.

It’s in amazingly good condition too – no chips! So often these fragile beauties do have minor nibbles to the edges of the enamel, if not far worse.

The pendant top folds down when the pansy is being worn as a brooch in yet another sign of thoughtful craftsmanship in this pretty piece.

It’s so apt too to list on Mother’s Day, as pansies symbolise fond thoughts and memories.
