Here’s a very pretty gold and platinum ring from the early 20th century.

The three central good old European cut diamonds are set in fine millegrained collets.

Tiny rose cut diamonds cover the ornate top and shoulders, tapering to the band.

This section has been made separately to the body of the ring, enabling space to be introduced between the elements – an important feature of the design.

I particularly like the fine collet settings surrounding the central diamonds. It would be virtually impossible to recreate that finish with the old millegraining had the diamonds been replaced at any time.

So it’s a good indication that the diamonds are original to the mount, and offers a more streamlined look than claw settings.

And the ring sits low on the finger, in keeping with the period but also practical for modern-day living.
