Here’s a lovely mid-19th century strand of coral beads, still retaining its original gold Etruscan Revival clasp.

The colour throughout is most appealing – a deep reddish orange.

Old beads like this have a patina of countless microscopic scratches caused by years of gentle handling, giving an attractive matte softness to the intense colour.

Close examination shows pinprick dark spots on several beads – coral was a living thing, if there were no small, natural flaws you’d wonder about them being authentic – but one bead is more marked than the others. I’ve included a photo for full disclosure.

The size is good too, with the beads graduating from 9mm to 12mm.

The strand is a good wearable length at just over 16 inches, and the knotting is recent and in excellent condition.
