Antique Australian gold ring by Edward Schafer, circa 1880

Here’s a chance to own a very rare piece of Australian jewellery history.
This exquisitely engraved rendering of vine leaves and grapes – symbolising prosperity and abundance – exemplifies the work that came out of the Victorian colony in the gold rush years.
Examples of rings in good condition with an attributable maker from this period are very hard to find, partly because not many were made, but also because of their fragile nature.
Mid to late 19th century Australian rings were fashioned from very thin sheets of gold. And they typically used botanical forms – a bunch of grapes like this was a recurring motif. The few survivors often have no identifying marks.
The band is marked with ES in gothic lettering and an emu, for the acclaimed Melbourne goldsmith Edward Schafer.
