SOLD: Art Nouveau gold cross, circa 1900

The Art Nouveau period went from 1885 to 1915. It overlapped and intertwined with the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.
Today Art Nouveau jewellery is some of the hardest to find. Why? Because it was a minority movement at the time, and good examples are usually handmade, so they were labour-intensive.
Here’s one: a 15-carat cross from about 1900. The contrast between its polished frame and the matte, sinuous, centre flowers is subtle and appealing.
The reverse is identically engraved, a lovely detail typical of this time.
