Ask a question

This exquisite little jewelled pin in the form of a pansy was made in the early Victorian period from amethysts, citrines, turquoise and rich 15-carat yellow gold.

I love the beautiful texture and shape of the leaves and stem. The tiny size just adds to its feeling of preciousness.

The stones are open set and have pretty looped filigreed gallery surrounds.

Botanists were breeding violas into pansies at this time, one of the reasons for their popularity in early 19th century jewellery, apart from their intrinsic beauty and their link to the French word pensé and the phrase pensé a moi – “think of me”.

There is a similar example (as pictured) in the Hull Grundy Collection at the British Museum.

These are increasingly hard to find, and I was only able to obtain this one as it belonged to a longstanding customer.

I love it as much as I did when I sold it to her about 30 years ago. Thank you, Joan, for giving me the chance to own this again.
