Ask a question

I choose pieces by weighing their design, workmanship, authenticity, wearability and the intrinsic value of the components against rarity and condition. (Thus my insistence on impeccable condition for more commonly seen items.)

This mid-19th century micromosaic in high-carat gold has a few surface scratches – scrapes, not cracks – on the black glass. There’s no damage to the mosaic itself, which is so fine it could easily be mistaken for painted porcelain. It is exquisite work – and the colours are ravishing.

So yes, I sometimes buy antique pieces that aren’t pristine … as long as they are rare and special. I’m delighted to offer this for sale.

Of course, I’ve factored the light signs of wear into my asking price.
